Epsom to use unique new cooling rug
EPSOM is taking horse welfare a stage further at the Derby meeting, where trainers of the placed horses will be offered a new rug that has been scientifically proved to cool a horse’s body temperature by seven degrees in ten minutes.
Branded the Equi-N-icE Rapid Cooler Rug and developed by Dorset-based Equiplus Intercontinental, the all-over covering provides a two-hour cooling effect.
Epsom MD Stephen Wallis says: "Horse welfare is paramount, and we want to be at the forefront with new ideas. The cooling rug seems an ideal product."
The rug is the latest product developed from the re-useable cooling bandage launched by Equiplus director Kay Russell in 2004.
She says: "The Equi-N-icE rug is a unique alternative to the conventional 'sweat rug’, which relies on air convection alone for its cooling effect. "Combined with our liquid coolant, it works by dropping the horse's core body temperature as quickly and safely as possible.
"Optimum temperature reduction after work and the dissipation of heat from tendons and joints have long been a challenge for trainers. But our special fabric structure moves moisture away from the skin surface, and draws heat away from the muscles by rapid evaporation. "The cooling rug is quick and efficient to apply, and ideal for post-race use, after exercise, travelling, and in hot conditions."
